First cruise? Here are 10 things experienced cruise passengers wish they'd known before embarkation day at Southampton Port.
Embarking on your first cruise from Southampton is an exciting day. But embarkation can also be chaotic if you're not prepared. Here are 10 tips from experienced cruise passengers.
1. Know Your Terminal Before You Leave Home
Southampton has four terminals (Mayflower, Ocean, City, Horizon). Getting the wrong one on embarkation day is a stress you don't need. Check your e-ticket, confirm with your cruise line, and tell your taxi driver your cruise line and ship name.
2. Arrive at Your Allocated Time
Cruise lines assign check-in time windows for a reason. Arriving hours early means standing in a queue outside. Arriving on time means walking straight through.
3. Tag Your Luggage the Night Before
Cruise lines send luggage tags — attach them before you leave home. Porters collect tagged bags at the terminal. Untagged bags cause delays.
4. Keep Essentials in Your Carry-On
Your main cases won't reach your cabin until mid-afternoon. Pack a change of clothes, medication, phone charger, and travel documents in your carry-on.
5. Leave Early (But Not Too Early)
Account for traffic, especially on summer Saturdays when thousands of passengers are simultaneously arriving. Build in 30 minutes of buffer but don't arrive more than 30 minutes before your allocated time.
6. Have Your Documents Ready
Passport, SetSail Pass/e-ticket, and booking confirmation should be easily accessible, not buried in your luggage.
7. Pre-Order Your Cruise Extras Before You Sail
Drinks packages, specialty dining, and shore excursions are cheaper if booked before departure rather than onboard.
8. Don't Overpack
Most cabins have limited storage. For a 7-night cruise, two mid-size cases per person is usually plenty.
9. Visit the Pool Deck First
While waiting for your cabin to be ready, head to the pool deck for your first meal onboard — it's usually buffet-style and the best way to start soaking up the atmosphere.
10. Book Your Return Transfer in Advance
Disembarkation day is equally busy. Book your return transfer home at the same time as your outbound. We offer both journeys at combined rates.
